Are your YouTube privacy settings too private? Despite the step by step instructions that YouTube provide, many WordPress website and blog owners are tripping up.
Many don’t realise that assigning the privacy settings to their YouTube videos before embedding them onto their website, renders them unviewable.
YouTube Privacy Settings
If you’ve created a YouTube channel and already do, or intend to, embed your videos into your blog or website, then… this quick tip will help you avoid tripping up with your privacy settings!
For example… press play on the video below!
Privacy Setting Trip Up
OK, if you clicked to play the above video,
- you’ll have been presented with a “please sign in to view” notice
You could follow the click through process, but you still won’t be able to watch the video because the settings have been set to “private” in the youtube settings area.
People tend to select the ‘Private’ setting, thinking that they can embed their video into their website or blog for only their site visitors to view, and that nobody else can find or embed it.
However, as you can see from the above example, this is not the case.
‘Private’, as per YouTube, means that only people you choose can see it. You actually have to ‘invite’ the people you want to view it.
Choose an Alternative Setting
The next best thing to ‘Private’ is ‘Unlisted’.
Choosing the ‘unlisted’ setting option, still allows you to embed your video into your site and will allow your site visitors to actually watch it.
Using the ‘unlisted’ setting not only makes your video viewable, but also means that the video will NOT be listed on your Channel listings.
This gives you some level of privacy, but does not make your videos completely private or inaccessible – anyone who knows the url to your video will still be able to access and view it.
